What I didn’t realise at the time
It wasn’t just me. Up to 92% of women experience breastfeeding challenges – things like:
- engorgement
- blocked milk ducts
- mastitis
- issues with milk supply
I remember thinking:
If breastfeeding is so important for mums and babies, why isn’t there more support?
What was actually going on
I spoke to a number of lactation consultants, and they all pointed to the same thing.
A lot of the issues I was experiencing came down to inflammation and poor milk flow.
When milk isn’t moving properly through the breast, everything builds:
That “blocked” feeling isn’t imagined – it’s physical.
And underneath that is something I didn’t know was relevant: lymphatic congestion.
The lymphatic system helps move fluid and manage inflammation. When it’s not working efficiently, things get stuck. Lymphatic drainage has been highlighted in the latest research as key for managing breastfeeding problems.
But in reality, even though we know it’s very beneficial, it’s not easy to do, especially when you’re exhausted, overwhelmed – and not trained in how to do it.
There wasn’t a real solution
This is what surprised me the most.
There were pumps.
There were bottles.
There were creams.
But there wasn’t anything that actually helped with the core problems of breastfeeding – the things almost every woman experiences.
That’s why I created Lactamo
Not as a “product idea”.
But because the clinical advice existed, but there was no simple way for women to actually apply it.
I kept coming back to the same question:
We have such great research, so why isn’t this translated into an easy to use solution, especially since it’s such a common problem?
Lactamo was designed to:
- support milk flow
- address inflammation (especially engorgement, blocked ducts and mastitis)
- reduce pressure and discomfort
- make the clinically recommended techniques easier to do
Working closely with a team of experienced lactation consultants, we brought Lactamo to life.
It combines:
- temperature (gentle warmth or cool)
- movement
- gentle compression
In a way that works with your body, not just when problems arise, but also to help prevent them.
For all of the common problems there are step-by-step very easy animation videos here showing how to use Lactamo.
What’s been validating since
Over the past five years, Lactamo has been extensively independently studied and used in hospitals.
An independent clinical trial published in the International Breastfeeding Journal found that 100% of mums who used it would recommend it.
There’s also been extensive trials in maternity hospitals. A leading hospital in Amsterdam measured inflammation and pain, concluding that it’s “a breakthrough in breastfeeding”.
But beyond the clinical side, what matters most to me is what mums say.
That it helped when nothing else did.
That it made things feel manageable again.
That it helped them continue breastfeeding when they thought they couldn’t.
That always brings me back to why I started.
If you’re struggling with breastfeeding
If you’re dealing with:
- engorgement
- blocked ducts
- mastitis
- supply issues
You’re not failing.
You’re experiencing something that most women go through – just without the right support.
