Empowered Birth: How Birth Education Helps Parents and Partners Thrive
Birth education in Australia is becoming an essential step for parents-to-be. Midwife-led workshops and positive birth classes not only prepare mothers for labour but also give partners confidence, practical tools, and emotional support for one of life’s biggest transitions. We sat down with Lucy Carroll, a practising midwife, educator and founder of Birth & Beyond Education, to explore how empowered birth education helps families thrive.
What inspired you to become a midwife and focus on birth education?
I was drawn to midwifery through both family influence and personal experience. When my sister was born prematurely, I spent time in the NICU and became fascinated with the resilience of babies and the way families were supported. That experience shaped my path.
Now, as a midwife, I’m passionate about providing midwife-led workshops that give parents realistic, evidence-based preparation. Birth education in Australia often happens within the hospital system, and I believe families deserve honest, supportive teaching that helps them feel confident and informed.
What can parents expect from your positive birth classes?
Parents can expect small group, interactive sessions that are supportive and fun. Our positive birth classes are designed to build confidence, teach practical tools, and set realistic expectations.
We focus on preparing families for labour while also helping them understand how to work with their birth team. This builds reassurance, knowing that Australia is one of the safest places in the world to give birth. By creating an empowered birth experience, parents not only feel prepared for labour but also for the transition into parenthood.
Birth Plan vs. Birth Wishes. What’s the Difference?
A birth plan can sometimes feel rigid, while a birth wishlist is more about preferences and flexibility. When we frame it as “birth wishes,” it becomes a tool for communication rather than a fixed outcome.
This approach helps families prepare for different scenarios, keeps them empowered, and reduces the risk of trauma if things don’t go exactly as planned. Birth wishes are about creating shared understanding, ensuring safety, and supporting parents in aiming for their best birth while staying open to change.
How can mums stay confident while embracing the unknowns of birth?
Confidence starts with choosing the right education and care provider. When women invest in how to prepare for birth through quality classes, they understand their options and feel supported.
Birth doesn’t always go to plan, but empowered birth is about whether a mother feels respected, safe, and strong. Communication, skin-to-skin contact, and early bonding are priorities that truly shape the experience and carry into postpartum life.
What’s one myth about birth education you’d love to bust?
Hollywood often portrays birth as chaotic, bright lights, screaming, and a woman flat on her back. Childbirth education shows a different reality.
In midwife-led workshops, we teach that women don’t have to birth on the bed. Movement, upright positions, water birth, and calming environments like dim lighting and music all support the natural process. Birth can be intimate, safe, and empowering, not like the movies.
How do positive birth classes prepare partners for their role?
I often tell couples that the class is almost more for the partner than the mother. Positive birth classes provide partner support in labour by teaching practical tools like massage, reassurance, hormone-boosting touch, and when to head to hospital.
By the end of the workshop, partners leave confident and empowered, ready to step into their role and actively support the birthing parent.
Do you have an example of how education transformed a birth experience?
Absolutely. One partner told me how our positive birth class transformed their confidence. On the day, they were calm, knew how to communicate with midwives, and stayed present throughout labour.
The empowered birth experience wasn’t just about knowledge; it was about confidence, connection, and the ability to support their partner fully.
Why are birth debriefs important after labour?
Birth debriefs give families time to process their story, ask questions, and feel heard. Hospitals are busy, so parents often miss this chance.
Debriefs allow us to celebrate the joy of birth while also identifying emotional needs such as postnatal depression, breastfeeding struggles, or exhaustion. This kind of postpartum education helps families feel supported as they adjust to life with a newborn.
How does postpartum education complement birth preparation?
Postpartum education is the natural extension of birth preparation. Before birth, we build knowledge and tools for labour. After birth, those conversations help parents connect theory with reality.
Postpartum education and support are vital during the intense early weeks of feeding challenges, sleep deprivation, and emotional changes. These discussions provide reassurance, clarity, and practical guidance right when parents need it.
What would you say to mums considering a birth class?
Investing in a birth class is about more than knowledge; it’s about preparing for this life-changing experience as a family. Parents spend so much on baby gear, but the real investment is in confidence and connection.
That’s why I always encourage mums: book the class! You won’t regret it. It’s the best way to feel prepared, supported, and empowered for birth and beyond.
What’s one piece of wisdom you wish every parent knew?
I wish every parent knew the importance of being present. Labour and early parenthood can be challenging, but they’re also filled with magic, love, and hormonal highs.
Relax, connect, and embrace the ride. An empowered birth and positive birth experience come not from perfection, but from presence, support, and love.
