About Mum Economy
Mum Economy is a purpose-led platform designed to make flexible work more accessible for mothers, while helping families and businesses find capable, trusted people for the work they genuinely need done.
I’m Katherine, the founder of Mum Economy, and the idea came from something I experienced personally. Like so many women, becoming a mum didn’t change my capability, ambition or willingness to work, but it did change the hours I had available. I became increasingly aware of how many highly skilled, experienced and capable mothers are pushed to the edges of the workforce simply because traditional work is still structured around availability that often doesn’t fit with caring responsibilities.
Mum Economy was created to help change that.
Through our free platform, mums can find flexible paid opportunities that fit around family life, while households, local businesses and organisations can post real jobs and tasks they need help with. These might range from administration, marketing and small business support to gardening, household help, event work, pet care, packing orders or other practical jobs that can often be completed within school hours or around caring commitments.
For families, Mum Economy is also about making everyday life a little easier. There are so many things sitting on the never-ending family to-do list, and often another mum in your local community has exactly the skills, experience or availability to help.
We’re currently growing from our home base in Brisbane, with a strong focus on building genuine local participation before expanding more broadly. Rather than becoming another generic job board, I want Mum Economy to create a community where flexible work is normal, mothers’ skills are valued, and families and businesses can access an incredible pool of talent that is too often overlooked.
At its heart, Mum Economy is built around a simple belief: motherhood doesn’t reduce capability. It changes availability. And work can be designed differently.
Areas of expertise
I have a background in biomedical science and spent more than a decade working in clinical embryology, including laboratory management roles within the IVF industry. I later moved into workplace health and safety, completing postgraduate qualifications in Occupational Health and Safety and a Master of Health, Safety and Environment.
My professional and academic interests increasingly focus on psychosocial safety, gender equality and the structural barriers that affect women’s participation in work. That experience has strongly influenced the way I’m building Mum Economy, particularly my interest in creating practical, flexible ways for mothers to participate economically without having to choose between meaningful work and caring responsibilities.

Helping Children Navigate Grief
Children experience grief differently than adults. They may not have the words to express their feelings, so they show them in other ways—through tears, anger, or even unexpected silliness. Some days, they may seem perfectly fine, and the next, a wave of sadness can hit them out of nowhere. It’s all part of how they process the big feelings they don’t fully understand yet.
