When Baby Sleep Feels Impossible: Honest Advice from a Sleep Consultant
When Baby Sleep Feels Impossible: A Sleep Consultant’s Honest Take on Asking for Help
For many families searching for baby sleep help in Australia, there comes a point when baby sleep stops feeling like a rough patch and starts feeling impossible.
The nights are long. The days are foggy. You have tried all the obvious things. Awake windows. Darker rooms. Earlier bedtime. Later bedtime. Advice from friends, Google, or social media. And yet somehow, nothing seems to truly shift.
We asked Sacha Rendoth, Certified Sleep Consultant & founder of Settle and Flow to share what she sees behind the scenes,
We asked about who typically reaches out, why parents often wait so long to ask for help, and what she wants exhausted parents to know when they are in the thick of it.
What kind of families or sleep challenges do you typically support?
Most mums or dads who contact me have been sleep deprived and struggling with their sleep issues for a few months.
They have usually tried many basic things like awake windows or darkening the room or earlier/later bedtime, but not always changed the most challenging drivers like feeding to sleep or rocking to sleep, as they simply do not know how to make the change from where they are.
They are generally feeling exhausted and that they have tried many things, but nothing is changing, or they do not know how to change what they know they need to change. Sometimes parents are so exhausted that they don’t have the energy to make changes either. They are in a cycle that they cannot step out of.
The parents who may contact me sooner are those who have had very good sleepers, and then all of a sudden, sleep becomes challenging. They will usually contact me within weeks, as the change has been quite drastic for them.
How do you make sure the advice you give is evidence based, where does it come from and how do you stay current?
I am a member of the Sleep Sense Certified Sleep Consultants where there is monthly continuing education and a professional group we can resource at any time, led by certified sleep consultant mentors.
For parents navigating endless and often conflicting baby sleep advice, knowing your support is backed by ongoing education can make a significant difference in how confident you feel.
How do you make sure your approach works for each individual family rather than a one size fits all method?
I work with families on a very individual approach.
I have a base method I work with but each case is very different, as is each child and baby. I always change my approach based on how the baby or child responds and the capacity of the parents at each stage of the process.
I generally use a 4 stage stepped process to making changes to sleep and settling within the family.
During the course of my 2 week program I am making contact with parents every 1–3 days to check in and suggest any individual changes. The follow up phone calls are a key part of the program which really offers the customised support families need.
For many families, this is the missing piece. Not more information, but personalised, ongoing support.
There is so much conflicting sleep advice out there, how do you help families feel confident they are making the right call?
There is a lot of conflicting advice and parents are very reassured when they are offered a plan and a step by step approach with day to day support, to offer them confidence with making the changes they need to make.
They often come having tried a few different things and often it is rarely the advice I offer them, so it gives them confidence knowing that a midwife, mum of 4 and certified sleep consultant has further insight and approaches for their situation.
When you are sleep deprived, even small decisions can feel overwhelming. Having a clear, supported plan can change everything.
To the sleep deprived parent, who is googling ‘baby sleep help in Australia’ at midnight, what would you say to them?
Having more consistent sleep for you and your baby will honestly change your life.
Sleep is so important in being able to cope with all that parenting throws at you and the changes are not always as hard as you feel they will be.
There is a step by step way to change and move through all the challenges you are encountering and I can be there with you every step of the way.
Questions to Ask a Baby Sleep Coach Before You Start
Choosing the right baby sleep consultant matters. Asking the right questions can help you find an approach that suits your baby, your values, and your family.
Start with these key questions:
What approach do you use?
What qualifications, training and experience do you have?
Do you use “cry it out” methods at all?
When is the best time to start sleep coaching?
Will I need to follow a strict routine?
Can I still feed my baby overnight?
How long does it usually take to see results?
When baby sleep feels impossible, support matters
If you are deep in sleep deprivation, it can be hard to know whether to keep waiting, keep trying different strategies, or finally ask for help.
But often, the hardest part is not the sleep challenge itself. It is trying to navigate it while exhausted, overwhelmed and unsure what to do next.
If you are searching for baby sleep help in Australia, the right support can make this feel manageable again.
Support brings clarity. It helps you understand what is driving the sleep challenges, what changes will actually help, and how to move forward in a way that feels manageable for your family.
Because when baby sleep feels impossible, what you often need is not more noise.
You need a plan.
You need support.
You need a village.
